How to sign your Will correctly

A Will only works if it is signed and witnessed properly. Here is how to get it right first time.

Most problems with home-signed Wills come from the signing, not the wording. A few simple rules make all the difference.

Choose the right witnesses

You need two independent adults. Avoid anyone who benefits from your Will, and their husband, wife or civil partner.

Sign with both witnesses present

Both witnesses must watch you sign, at the same time. Each witness then signs while you watch.

Leave it intact

Do not staple, clip or attach anything, and do not remove pages. Keep the original safe and tell your executors where it is.

This is general information about the law in England and Wales, not advice about your circumstances.
