Choose people you trust to make decisions for you if you are ever unable to make them yourself.

Best for: anyone over 18 who wants trusted people able to act for them in future.

What is included

  • Property & financial affairs, health & welfare, or both
  • Choose attorneys and replacement attorneys
  • Plain-English help with how attorneys make decisions
  • Checked by our team before forms are prepared
  • Step-by-step guidance on signing and OPG registration

What you will need

  • Names, dates of birth and addresses of your attorneys
  • Details of a certificate provider (someone who knows you well, or a professional)
  • Around 20–30 minutes per LPA — you can save and come back

The two types of LPA

  • Property and financial affairs — paying bills, managing bank accounts and benefits, and selling property. You can allow it to be used while you still have capacity.
  • Health and welfare — decisions about daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and, if you choose, life-sustaining treatment. It can only be used when you cannot make the decision yourself.

Why make one now

You can only make an LPA while you have the mental capacity to do so. If you lose capacity without one, your family may need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a deputy, which usually takes longer and costs more.

Common questions

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

An LPA is a legal document that lets you choose people you trust (your attorneys) to make decisions for you. There are two types: one for property and financial affairs, and one for health and welfare. You can make one or both.

When can an LPA be used?

An LPA cannot be used until it has been registered by the Office of the Public Guardian. A property and financial affairs LPA can be used while you still have mental capacity, if you allow it. A health and welfare LPA can only be used when you are unable to make the decision yourself.

Does completing the questions create my LPA?

No. We use your answers to prepare your LPA. It must then be signed by the right people in the right order, and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used. We guide you through each of these steps.

Is there a fee to register an LPA?

Yes. The Office of the Public Guardian charges its own fee to register each LPA, separate from our price. You may be able to pay less, or nothing, depending on your income or benefits. Check GOV.UK for the current fee.

Who can be an attorney?

Anyone aged 18 or over whom you trust to act in your best interests — often a family member or close friend. For a property and financial affairs LPA, an attorney must not be bankrupt or subject to a debt relief order.

What is a certificate provider?

A certificate provider is an independent person who confirms that you understand your LPA and are not being pressured into making it. They must have known you well for at least two years, or have relevant professional skills, such as your GP or a solicitor. Some people, including your attorneys and family members, cannot do this.
