Why does the signing order matter for an LPA?

Updated October 27, 2026

An LPA must be signed in a set order: first you (the donor), then your certificate provider, then your attorneys and any replacement attorneys. Signatures that need a witness must be witnessed, and an attorney cannot witness your signature. If the order is wrong, the Office of the Public Guardian will not register it. We include clear instructions with your documents.

This is general information about the law in England and Wales, not advice about your circumstances.
